Coimbatore :An Overview

 One of the earliest known settlers of Kongunadu,The Irula tribesmen marked their territory.Their fearless leader Kovan walked around his Newfoundland in stoic pleasure.He would make this land the hub of Irula activity..and he would call it “Kovanpatti”Later on,his tribe would be vanquished and this land passed on from one ruler to the next and during the ages of its many conquerors namely the Rashrakutas,The Cholas,Pandyas,Cysalas,Madurai sultans and the Vijayanagara kings,and finally the rulers of mysore and then passed onto the British ,Kovans name Kovanpatti stayed on, the forests around this land over time was cleared and a new village arose..Kovanputhur.And when this village was conquered by the British,they as usual,couldn’t pronounce the name..hence uttering..”Coimbatore..?”There is also the theory that a tribe called the Kosars made it their home so it was called “Kosambathur”.Today, Coimbatore stands as one of the most industrialised and flourishing cities in South Asia.Coimbatore is the third largest city in Tamil Nadu with a population of more than fifteen lakh people.

         The industrial might of Coimbatore and  entrepreneurship of its people are the highlights of the city.Coimbatore and its neighbours namely tirupur is named as the Manchester of the south because of its bamboozling textile industry which owes its wealth largely to the fertile soil of the region and the importance given to agriculture and the many agricultural land lords in and around the region.This rose to the growth of Cotton and hence the textile connection.Other industries which have come up are the naturally textile machinery,motor pump sets.,automobile spare parts,electonics,iron and steel,and aluminium foundries..and tirupurs burgeoning power in garments.
    The climate of Coimbatore is perhaps the icing to its cake,since the conducive weather is an attraction to one and all.The reasonably manageable summers and the pleasant winters,the lukewarm daytime and the cool nights with zero humidity have always complemented Coimbatore to its advantage.Coimbatore’s edge on this vital factor is a trump card in its social spectrum since it attracts migrants from afar and hence increases the cosmopolitan nature and productivity greatly.
      Coimbatore’s people,I would rate,as one of the most decent,polite,helpful,and cheerful kind I have ever seen.They are educated,modern in outlook,essentially traditional and celebrates the culture of the south and of Tamil Nadu immensely.Coimbatore is largely,a safe haven for women professionals and women in general with adequate policing and almost no criminal activity to note save some unsavoury incidences like the bomb blasts which shook coimbatore but which could not blow out the fire nor the spirit of coimbatoreans.
       Coimbatores education scenario has stunned the academic world ,with its more than twenty two engineering colleges and other streams in and around the city.The Coimbatore Agricultural College is one of the oldest academic institutions in the country,and its students respected far and wide.The academic atmosphere and the love for any form of study is clearly evident from the hi flying achievements of the people overseas and in India which start from a very early age. The teeming college crowd add more light and lustre to the already shining city.The sheer zeal for learning and the industrial affection is indeed very satisfying and exciting in some ways.The prospects of coimbatore seems to keep on increasing day by day because of such strong academic roots.
        Eating out is a favourite pastime of most Coimbatoreans.With Hotels like The Residency,Alankar,That’s y food and many more,the people of Coimbatore can most definitely choose and indulge in their palatial desires.Many other smaller but formidable joints also cater to the interests of the people and make more and more evenings worthwhile.Partying had its limitations in Coimbatore but with the arrival of Bikes and Barrels even the youngsters can let their hair down during the weekends.With its proximity to Kerala and Ooty,Coimbatore is a favoured stop over for most tourists and an excellent shopping option.The Oppanakara street,crosscut road and r.s.puram serve as business hubs for garments,household items,and most things under the sun.Medical giants like KG,Kuppuswamy Naidu,PSG hospitals keep the banner of health care flying high.With quality healthcare and specialist doctors,especially in cardiovascular diseases,coimbatore is the place they “have to” be in for any resident or keralite or the small towns surrounding coimbatore,or yonder.
